Overview

Poutwater Pond Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a Massachusetts Fish & Wildlife property located on the Holden–Princeton border. The area features an isolated bog pond, late‑June orchid blooms, and excellent birdwatching opportunities. You can access the WMA from:

  • Esty Road in Princeton, or
  • Holden Road in Sterling

Because the area includes several intersecting dirt roads, carrying a map or GPS is recommended.

Route Description

1. Start at Esty Road

  • Park at the end of Esty Road.
  • Two gravel roads head south toward Poutwater Pond.
  • Take the right‑hand road, which follows a soft, pine‑needle‑covered path.

2. First Junction — Stay Left

  • At the first junction, bear left to continue toward the pond.
  • Cross a small field diagonally.
  • Bear right onto an access road.
  • When the access road meets a wider, more frequently used gravel road, turn right.

3. Explore Poutwater Pond

  • The pond is a quiet, wildlife‑rich spot with good views and habitat variety.
  • A short side path leads to the water’s edge and continues along the shoreline for several dozen feet.
  • Note: This area may be muddy or flooded after rain.

4. Continue South to Holden Road

  • Retrace your steps from the pond back to the gravel road.
  • Continue south until you reach Holden Road in Sterling.
  • This is the most commonly used access point for Poutwater Pond.

5. Return to Esty Road

  • Turn around and follow the same route back to your starting point.

Additional Options

  • Caution: Beaver activity has recently caused flooding near the Mason Road parking area.
  • This out‑and‑back extension makes a pleasant add‑on after visiting the pond.
  • Turnoff location: On the right shortly after leaving the pond.
