Overview
Poutwater Pond Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a Massachusetts Fish & Wildlife property located on the Holden–Princeton border. The area features an isolated bog pond, late‑June orchid blooms, and excellent birdwatching opportunities. You can access the WMA from:
- Esty Road in Princeton, or
- Holden Road in Sterling
Because the area includes several intersecting dirt roads, carrying a map or GPS is recommended.
Route Description
1. Start at Esty Road
- Park at the end of Esty Road.
- Two gravel roads head south toward Poutwater Pond.
- Take the right‑hand road, which follows a soft, pine‑needle‑covered path.
2. First Junction — Stay Left
- At the first junction, bear left to continue toward the pond.
- Cross a small field diagonally.
- Bear right onto an access road.
- When the access road meets a wider, more frequently used gravel road, turn right.
3. Explore Poutwater Pond
- The pond is a quiet, wildlife‑rich spot with good views and habitat variety.
- A short side path leads to the water’s edge and continues along the shoreline for several dozen feet.
- Note: This area may be muddy or flooded after rain.
4. Continue South to Holden Road
- Retrace your steps from the pond back to the gravel road.
- Continue south until you reach Holden Road in Sterling.
- This is the most commonly used access point for Poutwater Pond.
5. Return to Esty Road
- Turn around and follow the same route back to your starting point.
Additional Options
Trail to Mason Road (Coal Kiln Road)
- A scenic side trail heads west from the main gravel road toward Mason Road, where a marked parking area is available.
- Caution: Beaver activity has recently caused flooding near the Mason Road parking area.
- This out‑and‑back extension makes a pleasant add‑on after visiting the pond.
- Turnoff location: On the right shortly after leaving the pond.
