Hike Overview
- This is a tour of the trails on the south side of the sanctuary and explores the Beaver Bend, Pasture and Fern Forest trails The return is via Goodnow Road. This is an easy walk through the woods on well-tended paths. . There are many benches along the way to rest and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Total elevation is 250 feet. Admission to Wachusett Meadow is FREE for all Princeton residents and Mass Audubon members but there is a fee for others
Route Details
1. Beaver Bend Trail

- Start at the southwest corner of the parking lot.
- Pass the stone wall and enter the woods.
- Stop at the wetland/meadow viewpoint.
- Continue uphill to reach the Pasture Trail.
2. Pasture Trail

- Turn left onto Pasture Trail.
- Wide path through old pastures.
- When the trail loops right, continue straight onto Fern Forest Trail.
3. Fern Forest Trail

- Follow the loop around.
- Pass the Brook Trail.
- Return to Pasture Trail.
- Continue left down to Goodnow Road.
4. Return

- Turn right on Goodnow Road.
- Walk back to the parking area.
Other Options to Consider
- Brook Loop Trail
- Adds ~0.5 miles.
- Cross the brook (only possible when water levels are low).
- Trail goes through deciduous forest.
- Difficult to cross in winter.
- West Trail (Midstate Trail)
- From Goodnow Road, turn left instead of right.
- Leads to a scenic beaver pond.
- Out-and-back option.
- Other Options
- Walk around the meadow behind the parking lot.
- Visit the sanctuary store for maps, guidebooks, and merchandise.
