Leominster State Forest Hillbilly Heaven Hike

Trailhead

  • From East Princeton (on route 140), turn onto Leominster Road.
  • Drive about 1 mile, then turn left after the pond onto Lucas Road.
  • Turn right at the bend to go up Justice Hill Road for about 100 feet.
  • Park at the Justice Hill Trailhead gate (do not block the gate).

Description

This loop in the southeast section of Leominster State Forest is a gentle, wooded hike. Expect minimal signage and no blazes. The path includes small ups and downs and passes several ponds and streams. Terrain is mostly pine forest, with bridges and water pools, but stays fairly dry year-round.

Route Details

1. Justice Hill Gate

    • Enter through the gate and follow the trail
    • Bear left at two small intersections.
    • Continue to Bartlett Road.
    • Cross straight onto Hillbilly Heaven Trail.

2. Hillbilly Heaven Trail

    •  Well-used but lightly marked.
    • Winds uphill through pine forest.
    • Passes bridges and pools.
    • Stay straight at the left-side connector trail.
    • Continue until reaching Wolf Rock Road.

3. Wolf Rock Road (gravel).

    • Turn right onto Wolf Rock Road
    • Follow to the intersection with Hell’s Highway.
    • Turn right onto Hell’s Highway until it becomes Bartlett Road.

4. Brook Trail

    • Look for Brook Trail on the left.
    • A scenic path along a brook.
    • Loops back to the original trail and gate.
    • If missed, continue to Bartlett Road/Hillbilly Heaven intersection, then turn left to return to the gate.

Other Options

  • Wolf Den Loop (6–7 miles):
    • Before Wolf Rock Road, take the small left path to the Wolf Den rock formation.
    • Trail is not well marked so GPS is recommended.
  • Frick & Frack Loops:
    • After reaching Wolf Rock Road, look just to the right and across.
    • Two short loop trails (Frick and Frack) head north and reconnect with Wolf Rock Road.
