We all benefit from the rural, forested and agricultural nature of the town and the considerable open space. We are also fortunate to have many generous and perceptive citizens who took action to contribute to the conservation of parcels of land to help retain the character of the town.
Improving Public Awareness of Land Conservation Options
The Open Space Committee:
- Works with conservation groups such as the Princeton Land Trust, Mass Audubon and the Massachusetts Division of Conservation and Recreation
- Reviews open space priorities for the town
- Seeks to find ways to protect lands for the benefit of all Princeton residents
Land Protection Considerations
When considering to protect land, property owners can consider options such as:
- Protecting the land permanently or temporarily
- Selling or donating land
- Seeking tax benefits
Some Land Conservation Options
Chapter 61
- Your land remains undeveloped and is used for agriculture, recreation or forestry purposes
- Your receive a tax benefit in return for a temporary agreement to forego development
Conservation Restriction
- You sell future development rights
- You receive a tax benefit and potential estate benefit
- You retain ownership of the land
Donation or Sale of Land to a Conservation Organization
- You enable the land to permanently protected and cared for
- You benefit from a tax deduction.
